KOKA HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT ON THE AWASH RIVER

Opening up to the international market

Separator

The Koka Dam, eighty kilometres from the city of Addis Ababa, was commissioned by the Imperial Government of Ethiopia. It was the first hydroelectric power plant to be built in Ethiopia as a source of electric power to sustain the country's economic development. By ensuring a constant supply of water and a system of irrigation, the dam enabled the reclamation of the floodplain in order to improve the country's farming system. The concrete gravity dam, with a crest length of 430 metres and a maximum height of 40 metres, was completed in 1950. The plant started generating power in 1960.
